Menstruation, each lived experience matters

Published on 08.07.2021 at 12:00

“My sister and I experience menstruation very differently. She has only mild flow, mild cramps, mild symptoms, mild everything. I, on the other hand, am a poster child for all the bad parts of menstruation; I have insane cramps, so much that I pretty much cannot go out during my periods, which is 5 long days at least… I have so much blood every time, I wonder how I do not dry out. My face gets full of pimples a little before periods start and during my periods, I feel pain from an emotional view. The problem is that my dad thinks I am a drama queen because of my sister. I have been on contraceptives that regulate the blood and cramps but mess up with my mood. So, I still count as a drama queen #NOT.”

“There is a “hack” that I have been using every now and then, and I know my friends are doing the same. When it is “inconvenient” to have a period, like say planned vacation, boyfriend visiting, important exam etc I just start a new tape and take the pill for an extra week or two. The problem is I do not really know if or how much I am messing up with my system and I am too afraid to ask my gynaecologist. She is a woman, but I am afraid I might be judged because I am tampering with this “holy” process. But the “hack” is too amazing to drop!”

“I often find myself trying to convince my boyfriend that the emotional roller coaster I experience during my period is REAL. That that period of the month the struggle is REAL, not an excuse to cry or be more angry or emotional than normal. Hormones do have a very real, predictable influence on feelings and behaviours, and it is not in my control. I wish that men would also experience a period JUST ONCE in their lifetime, just so to break that misconception!”
