Youth mental health education, promotion, and prevention in Europe fall short in identifying and tackling the effects of the intersectionality of racial and gender discrimination; gender-based violence; racism; and internalised racism on the mental health of racialised youth. Whereas adverse racist and discriminatory systems and racism experiences are embedded in structural contexts that increase mental health risk factors among racialised youth, there is no evidence-based study at European level on their effects on the physical, social, and mental well-being of racialised youth.
Indeed, studies on racism in Europe are seriously hampered by the lack of data; and thus, youth workers in Europe lack education resources. We are currently developing open educational resources for youth educators: (1). On manifestation of racism and gender-based violence to present how European societies' failure to tackle gender and racial discrimination contributes to the production and manifestation of more complex forms of racism and gender-based violence. (2). On the manifestation of internalised racism to present how internalising racism and discrimination by racialised, LGBTIQ youth is linked to a host of poor mental health outcomes and risk-taking behaviours.
Moreover, we are developing (1). Practical toolkit for educators with interactive workshops where artworks in the form of paintings and photographs can be used to initiate conversations on and address the impact of intersectionality of racial, gender discrimination; gender-based violence; racism; and internalised racism on the mental health of racialised, LGBTIQ youth. (2). Practical toolkit for youth educators on using experiential storytelling and theatre of testimony to initiate conversations on and address the impact of intersectionality of racial and gender discrimination; gender-based violence; racism; and internalised racism on the mental health of racialised and LGBTIQ youth. |
