As an adult learner, what is my understanding of interpersonal skills! Perhaps, this is something that we learn naturally, while interacting with family members and then making friends at school and outside our homes. Mostly, it is about being polite, kind and I would also add a sense of humour. But this also depends on the type of relationship and where it is forged; in education or at school it is different from homes.
To me at school, it is a place to meet up with my classmates and communicate with teachers. With classmates, my relationships are diverse and depend on common issues, mostly, they are about sharing information. I do not have many friends here, most of my classmates have jobs and less time for leisure. The teachers know very well how to communicate with us, they take into consideration our life experience and the fact that apart from studies we have a lot of going on in our lives, like jobs and families. They are really understanding people, something that says more about how the teachers use their interpersonal skills in adult education.
Teachers in an adult school are different from a school where children study. And I must say they taught me responsibility because there is less control. And also, the focus is more on how much effort you put into the learning process rather than on how well you do one or the other exercise. They taught me that everybody makes mistakes, and that hard work pays off sooner or later, which adds up to my confidence as well. So, I think that the most important aspect of teacher-student relationships in adult education is definitely mutual respect and communication, then every situation has a solution. |
