Talking about racism is not always easy. It can bring up anger, fear, sadness, or shame and memories that one has tried to put aside. For the racialised youth, sharing their life stories and experiences of racism often feels risky. They may worry that others will not believe them, will minimise what happened, or will expect them to explain race or racism in a more polite, acceptable, Eurocentric manner. This is why anti-racist education and artivism need more than good intentions. They both require brave spaces. A brave space is not a place where no one feels uncomfortable.
Conversations about race, racism, power, identities are indeed uncomfortable because they challenge racial prejudices, Eurocentric norms and make injustice visible. A brave space recognises this reality. Instead of promising that difficult feelings, emotions will not arise; it offers care, respect, support when they do. Creating such a brave space begins with a clear code of conduct: participation is always voluntary; everyone has the right to pass, remain silent, or choose another way to express themselves. Confidentiality matters! So does listening without interruption, judgement or the need to immediately offer advice! In such a brave space, racialised youth may want to speak, but they may also prefer to write, draw, use movement, or just listen to others.
Racism manifests in silence, self-doubt, isolation. When Black youth repeatedly hear that they are exaggerating or “making everything about race,” they often begin to question their own experiences. A brave space helps challenge this pattern; it shows that their feelings and memories are valid. Brave spaces make room for more than pain. They bring joy, pride, cultural heritage, humour, and creativity, and hopes for the future. They allow Black youth to talk about who they are beyond the Eurocentric norms and narratives imposed on them. Thus, a brave space means building a setting where everyone is treated with dignity; where boundaries are respected and difficult truths are confronted together. |
