I never expected a microphone to make me nervous. I had spoken in classrooms, at work and with friends, but recording my own voice felt different. There was no one to look at, no reaction to read and no easy way to hide from what I wanted to say. The story was mine, and I had to hear myself tell it. For years, I spoke about racism only when I had to. Even then, I chose my words carefully because I worried people would think I was exaggerating. I had learned to explain painful experiences in ways that made White people comfortable. I rarely admitted how much racism and racial trauma had affected me.
Recording my first podcast changed that. With no one interrupting me, I found myself speaking more honestly than I expected. I talked about trying to fit into spaces that did not reflect me, hiding the most important parts of my culture and of my identity, and wondering why I always felt I had to prove I belonged. Listening back after recording was emotional. I heard my own story without someone softening it, questioning it, or moving past it too quickly. I realised how often I had minimised and tried to ignore my lived experiences of racism that deserved to be named and called out. So, my voice gradually sounded stronger than I felt when I started.
After the podcast was shared, messages came from other Black people who knew me and those who did not know me at all. Some said they recognised themselves in my story. Others said I had spoken about feelings they had never managed to express out loud. This support and recognition taught me something important; our life stories can help someone else feel less alone. Every time we use our voices, we challenge the single story and remind young people across the African diaspora that their life stories matter. Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as pressing “record.” |
