We complain about how dirty our towns are, how polluted our oceans have become, and we are quick to blame climate change for the challenges we face. Yet, we are often the very people contributing to these problems through our everyday actions. We must first recognise the role each of us play in protecting the planet because we are part of it, and to protect our planet is to protect ourselves. We often rely on the government, local authorities, NGO’s and environmental advocates to take responsibility, but safeguarding the environment is a shared task that belongs to all of us.
Why do environmental problems continue to grow? One of the contributing factors is the lack of awareness about the relationship between our actions and the environment. However, beyond a lack of knowledge, some people remain ignorant because they believe these issues will not affect them personally. The reality is that every action has consequences, and therefore environmental damage and biodiversity degradation eventually become a threat to human health. With my background in Environmental Health Sciences, I have learned that protecting the environment is not only about preserving nature; it is about protecting our own health and future as well.
Though at some extent schools have started to play an important role in shaping future generations by teaching learners the value of sustainability, conservation, and responsible environmental practices; environmental education should not stop there, it must extend to communities, workplaces, and everyday life. These programmes foster a culture of accountability. Through community activities, people are given opportunities to participate actively and become part of the solution. By equipping people with knowledge and creating spaces for action, environmental education programmes transform awareness into meaningful change. |
