I am some years old; I am back in my hometown. It is late December, and it just started raining, all the kids run to play in the rain, the adults are seated having a warm cup of tea. I am surrounded by joyful chatter and laughter, the world I know is beautiful. Peace is all I know, and everything feels effortless. It feels as though peace will always be here, and the fear of it slipping away never crosses my mind. As I grew older, the protective bubble that shielded me throughout my childhood eventually burst. I was then faced with the cracks of the world, wondering what had happened to that once safe space?
Today I find myself having to redefine the word peace. I find myself coming to the realisation that we have pushed each other to a point where peace has been stripped from our communities. In the shadows, a young girl is bullied for being different, smiles have been used to hide emotional trauma, make-up used to cover up the scars of sexual assault, fearful to leave home, constantly glancing over her shoulders, as everywhere feels like a battlefield, drowning in a pool of insecurities, torn apart just to meet society’s expectations and yet we still judge each other for not being strong or for being different. The chaos of the world is already too much, despite that we choose to fight each other.
A community built on peace is the foundation of creating that safe space. Education and awareness are crucial to cultivate a culture where every voice is heard, conflicts are resolved respectfully, every heart is valued, and that bubble of safety is rebuilt. Peace provides a protective layer, which allows communities to flourish. When faced with challenges, this layer becomes the source of our strength, which fosters resilience, encourages cooperation and collaboration. Our differences can cause division; however, building a peaceful community means being able to push past that, and being able to embrace diversity allowing us to coexist harmoniously where everyone feels included. |
