Embracing Blackness occurs when a series of events leads to an increased awareness of the meaning of being Black and triggers a profound desire to confront an anti-Black identity. For many Black youth, these events take place within the context of personal experiences and observations, education, or activism. Most often, personal experiences and observations refer to direct experiences with racism and discrimination or with witnessing racism and discrimination. Education refers to non-formal or informal education about the history, cultural heritage or cultural experiences of people of African descent.
Non-formal education includes things like participating in community-based workshops with other Black youth. Informal education refers to things like travelling to explore Black art, culture, history, heritage and/or independent reading. Activism refers to both civic engagement and participation, such as advocating for an anti-racist education to challenge the unjust social policies; capturing racial injustices, like racial profiling or police brutality, on a video; or joining anti-racism protests. The outcome of these events is the experience of racial awakening and empowerment. This awakening and empowerment occur due to growing a critical awareness of what it means to be Black in Europe.
Embracing Blackness is characterised by access to both anti-racist education and activism. Without access to such an education and activism within safe, brave spaces, it becomes very difficult, if not impossible, for most Black youth to grow the kind of critical awareness that leads to both racial awakening and empowerment. Community workshops, civic participation, and engaging with Black communities are integral in facilitating Black youth to learn and explore the beauty of the Black skin and hair textures, and accomplishments made by Black people; and thus, become immersed in the fertile grounds of cultural experiences that honour and celebrate Blackness and Black heritage. |
