People are constantly learning, there isn’t a single day that goes by without leading to additional knowledge for all people. Thus, learning that occurs in non-formal settings, is becoming more significant as the kind of learning that occurs in formal settings.
However, this learning is not well understood, made visible and appropriately valued. Most research has focused on learning outcomes from formal education, instead of embracing all types of learning outcomes and promote their visibility and portability.
Non-formal learning is happening everywhere, at all the time. The world is changing; the best time to focus on the process of formal recognition of non-formal education. Whether through the awarding of a full or a partial certification, or any recognized document.
All learning has a value and most of it deserves to be made visible and recognized. Though, the real question is under which condition(s) the learning that has never been recognized could actually be codified, and lead to the awarding of a recognized document?
Educational policies, should acknowledge non-formal education as essential part of the educational process.
