As of July 2021, TERRAM PACIS has officially been granted Special Consultative Status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council; the highest status granted by the Council to non-governmental organisations, thereby allowing them to participate in the work of the United Nations, present views, or deliver testimony. The consultative relationship with non-governmental organisations also enables the Council or one of its bodies to seek expert information or advice from organisations with special competence in a subject matter.
Twice a year, the UN Committee on Non-Governmental Organisations reviews new applications for consultative status and makes recommendations to the Economic and Social Council, which reviews and decides to approve or deny the recommendations. Special Consultative Status is granted to organisations concerned with a few of the fields of activity covered by the Council, and thus, enables the organisation to engage in a number of ways with the Economic and Social Council and its subsidiary bodies, the Human Rights Council and, under specific conditions, meetings of the General Assembly and/or other intergovernmental bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat.
Thus, being granted the special consultative status is not only an important recognition of our organisation, but it also gives credibility to our youth work at the international level. It shows that the size of an organisation does not matter, rather the quality of its work and contribution in making visible and measurable social changes. Our focus is about making new meanings out of non-formal education and media and information literacy, connecting these domains to our educational work on human rights advocacy, peacebuilding, gender diversity, and environmental awareness. This work is regarded as being at the core of the United Nations work, specifically, the work of the United Nations Economic and Social Council - ECOSOC. |
