Human rights is a term many of us recognise, yet only vaguely understand. But have you ever imagined a world without human rights? Recently I attended the drafting of a Universal Health Coverage Bill. I was both excited and nervous to sit in a room filled with experienced officials, and I could not help but feel out of place. However, as I listened to the ideas, stories, and vision being shared, I slowly became calm. Instead of being intimidated, I began to realise that, for as long as humanity exists it is our shared responsibility to fight for human rights.
Because when I imagined a world without human rights, that picture gave me the confidence to raise my hand and speak. When we fight for human rights, it goes beyond individuality. It means standing up for those who cannot speak for themselves and ensuring children are protected rather than exploited. Human rights give people the opportunity to pursue their dreams and provide a platform to speak when dignity is threatened. Yet in today’s world we still hear of human trafficking, child marriage, sexual abuse, discrimination, and the issues are endless. All these problems are tied to the violation of human rights. But what happens to the stories that do not make the statistics?
When we stop fighting for our rights, we risk opening the portal of distraction, chaos. Fighting for human rights is the only way that we can live peacefully as global citizens, because history has proven over and over again that when we do not, we turn to war instead. We fight ourselves, the next person and the cycle continue. When do we say it is enough? Why are we comfortable with history remaining to repeat itself? When do we finally learn to be proactive and not reactive? Human rights activists, non-governmental organisations, and public campaigns exist because humanity cannot accept a world without human rights, and protecting them is our shared contribution to peace. |
