Why we focus on gender education

Published on 03.08.2026 at 15:24

Think back to the first time you heard someone say, “boys don't cry,” or when you were told that leadership was not for girls and you could not participate. Growing up, many of these teachings were accepted without question, often justified by the idea that “this is how things have always been.” As children, we rarely stop to ask why. But as we make our way into society, we begin to notice the inequalities that exist in opportunities, in workplaces, schools, and in the spaces, we try to occupy, even when we are equally qualified.

These teachings become part of who we are. They do not just disappear. They shape how we see ourselves and the world around us. In many households, girls are often taught not to be “too loud,” as silence is seen as a sign of being respectful or “lady-like.” Over time, this may lead many young girls to hesitate to speak up, even when they have valuable ideas to contribute. At the same time, many young boys grow up looking up to the men in their own families, learning that strength means being tough, unemotional, and always in control. This can make it difficult for them to express vulnerability and/or seek support, especially in a society that often does not make space for emotional needs. These patterns show how deeply gender roles are embedded in our daily lives.

Gender education programmes are essential because they create a space for both learning and unlearning. They encourage us to question the beliefs we inherited and challenge harmful gender stereotypes. After all, the world is neither for boys nor for girls alone it is a world we all share, where no gender is above the other. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, given equal rights and opportunities; valued for their abilities rather than judged by their gender. An equal world begins with the lessons we choose to learn today, and our gender education programme provides the foundation for those lessons by empowering the youth to strive for and build a fair and inclusive society.
